BOWEN has seasonal work available on farms in the district during the season between April and November,
and during the mango picking season, from November / December. Some variation can occur in the length of
farming and mango seasons. The best period to be assured of finding work is between July to September, and
November/December for the Mango season although some farms will require labour for planting and ground
preparation as early as April to June.

Bowen farms produce: Tomatoes, capsicum, chillies, button squash, cucumber, beans, corn, rockmelons,
honeydew melons, eggfruit, zucchini, pumpkins, peanuts, and mangoes. Please Note: If you wish to find
work yourself without contacting above establishments: Drive around the farming districts, check out which
farms employ contract workers, and go in and ask about work. You may need to do this every day, depending
on the amount of work available, whether your name is put on a list or not. The best time to ask is early
morning, as Backpacker buses do their rounds at this time. Some farms are not in production this year, so
please check and make sure that it is a working farm before approaching them. (You will see crops planted
and/or pickers or machinery in the fields working). If there is a sign saying “NO WORK REQUIRED” do not
enter.
The local paper sometimes also carries advertisements for farm work. This paper is published
Wednesdays and Fridays.
